New York Basketball Star Cited For DWI

by AdamS on July 25, 2012

Recently, New York Knicks point guard Jason Kidd was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The 36 year old basketball player, who was only recently signed by the Knicks one week ago, was out in New York City partying late into the night when he, ultimately, got behind the wheels of his car. Shortly after leaving the club where he had been partying, Kidd crashed his car into a telephone pole. Fortunately, no one was injured. However, Mr. Kidd was taken to the country jail after a short hospital visit to be booked for misdemeanor DWI. We do not know if Kidd has an alcohol addiction or if this is the result of one night of binge drinking. This is just the latest in a seemingly never ending string of events involving high profile, celebrity athletes. An increasing number of players are having to undergo prescription medication treatment such as vicodin drug detox.

What Happened

The 39 year old basketball star, who ironically was driving home from a charity event at a local night club, was said to be extremely disappointed in his behavior. It is certainly not the way you want to begin a new contract for a new team. In the state of New York, certain cases of DWI are considered misdemeanors and do not pose the threat of jail time. However, Mr. Kidd could be looking at substantial fines and the loss of his driver’s license. In addition, this is not the first time that Jason Kidd has had trouble with the law. In 2001, he was arrested for domestic battery after it was discovered that he brutally battered his wife after an argument. Alcohol was involved in that incident as well. Whether or not Jason Kidd suffers from an addiction to alcohol is up for speculation, however, it does appear that he lacks the discipline to drink responsibly.

It appears as if there is an epidemic of athletes and celebrities who show a complete lack of regard for the consequences of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. These individuals are often surrounded by individuals who are accustomed to acquiescing to every request a celebrity makes, and do not have the fortitude to tell them when their behavior is becoming detrimental to their careers. This kind of “yes” culture towards celebrities has led a number of stars to their graves. There needs to be a new initiative to help people in these types of situations get the alcohol and drug addiction treatment they need from individuals who do not have ulterior motives in dealing with them.

Being a celebrity comes with many pressures and demands. However, this is not an excuse to abuse alcohol and get behind the wheel of a car or truck that could kill somebody. Vicodin drug detox should also be looked into for players that have developed a dependency on it. It is important that all people, not just celebrities, who suffer from an addiction to drugs, or an alcohol addiction get help at a local addiction treatment facility. If Jason Kidd had been in counseling, this unfortunate event might have never occurred. Drinking and driving is a very grave threat to the citizens of this nation, and society should take whatever steps it can to insure that it is not tolerated.
