Passport Renewal – Steps For Renewing The Documentation

by garrett on August 23, 2011

The process for passports renewal can be completed through the mail by following the included steps below. In some cases, the passport will need to be renewed in person and so the information below will reflect both processes. Extenuating circumstances will warrant the need to apply in person rather than the mail option.

How To Apply

In order to apply by mail, the person must fall into all of the following categories. The first is their passport must be undamaged and available to be submitted with the application. The passport must be issued when they were 16 years or older and within the last 15 years. It must be issued in the current name of the person applying or legal documentation of a name change must be provided. I feel that online passports is the way to go.

DS-82 Form

As a side note, if the person is a previous passport holder and they are eligible to fill out form DS-82, they can submit the application by mail, even if it is their first US passport. Continuing on that note, people with an expired card have the choice to fill out the DS-82 form. Once completed, the form and the undamaged passport should be mailed using a traceable mailing solution.

US Citizens In Canada

Using a method to trace the activity of the mail will ensure that it reaches its destination unharmed. With information as sensitive as this, it is better to be safe than sorry. Additionally, it is recommended that the form and passport be mailed in an envelope large enough to hold the form in its unfolded state. The new passport can only be sent to addresses within the United States and Canada so no out of country addresses are permitted.

US Citizens Abroad

If a person is residing outside the United States or Canada, they should visit their nearest embassy to obtain a new passport. US citizens residing in Canada may submit their form via mail and they must mail the documents to the address listed on the DS-82 form. Individuals who are behind in their child support payments may be unable to obtain a passport and will be required to submit additional documentation.

DS-11 Form

If a person has to apply in person, they will be required to fill out a DS-11 form and submit it to an acceptance agent. The form must not be signed until the person is in the presence of the agent and is told to do so by the agent. A social security number must be submitted. If a person does not have this information or refuses to provide it, the result can be delays or failure to obtain a passport.

Required Documents

Additional information that is required for the process is proof of US citizenship in the form of a birth certificate or certificate of naturalization. Any paperwork submitted during the initial process will be returned to the applicant via US Mail. Upon being approved, the new passport will be sent with the other documentation to the address of the applicant.

The system that is designed for passports renewal is in place to protect the individuals applying along with the authorities in charge. As long as the rules are followed, a person can obtain their renewed passport with no problem at all. One thing to remember is if the passport is needed right away, the applicant must renew it in person. I feel that online passports is the way to go.
