Vix Swimwear And Today’s Modern Woman

vBathing suits are not new on the scene, the first ones appearing in Greece around 350 BC. Over the centuries the design and style of these suits has changed but appears to be going in a circular fashion. For example, those first suits in Greece were like the modern bikinis that are so popular in the present day. Today’s designers, such as Paula Hermanny’s Vix swimwear collection, has incorporated all the fashions, including these, in order to make suits that not only fit, but also compliment the human body.

There have been many fashions, through the years, in swimwear. Many of these have been influenced by the social mores of a particular period. A good example is the dress style that completely covered the body of any woman who wished to swim in public. As this became outmoded and society’s views toward a woman’s body became more liberal, less and less material appeared in the suits.

The use of swimwear in Greece went out of style when water use was primarily for physical therapy. It was not until the 18th century that France and England introduced suits for women that resembled smocks. Lead weights were stitched into the hems of these garments in order to keep them from floating and revealing the woman’s figure. It was the 1800’s Americans, however, that took the lead in swimwear when they adopted the beaches and water as a form of recreation.

Because of the advancement of water sports an alteration had to be made in swimming attire. While ensuring modesty of each individual, it had to be practical and allow for movement as well. When the 19th century rolled around the inclusion of women in water sports, particularly swimming, was an accepted thing. This was encouraged when they were included in the Olympic Games.

The fashion industry accepted swimwear as a viable part of their attire around the 1880’s. Designer suits came into vogue and the first one-piece suit was introduced. This suit included a wrap around skirt to ensure modesty. By the 20th century, the suits became more daring with more skin exposed, but they were still presented in a one-piece style. Eventually, two piece suits came along that left the stomach area exposed.

As time has progressed swimwear has not only become sexier by has involved much less material. This has exposed a woman’s body to the point of very little concealment. However, all styles did not fit everyone’s body contours which was very depressing to women who wished to be current with the fashion, but did not have a body that would compliment the styles provided.

It was 1998 before designers, such as Hermanny, realized that designing suits that did not fit a body’s figure was wrong. The result was a virtual revolution in the swimwear industry. That was the beginning of making garments specifically to fit special body needs that would compliment, rather than distract from, the woman’s figure. Styles and sizes were introduced in abundance, thus allowing women to try them on and find one that not only fit, but flattered the body even though it might not be the ‘standard’ previously extolled by the industry.

From 350BC to today is a long ways but, to prove that fashions never go out of style, the bikini bathing suit is once again a fashion statement on today’s beaches. This type of suit can be found in the Vix swimwear collection as well as those of other designers. Currently, it is possible to find a suit that is comfortable, fits well and compliment’s one’s figure. Shopping for a bathing suit is now a pleasure with the many choices available.
