Ways To Get Rid Of Spider Veins

by erin on March 23, 2011

Spider veins affect millions and it is usually because of how they sit or stand throughout the day. Poor circulation through the body can cause veins to twist and well up, with looks like webbing on the skin. This condition can affect you anywhere on the body, although your legs are the most common area because of the pressure put on them. Thankfully, there are ways to get rid of this unsightly webbing.

Your blood needs to flow and circulate freely throughout the body.  When it does not, this condition can occur. That is why it is important to promote healthy circulation through exercise, moving around, and daily activities like walking. Those that stand in one position for long periods or sit constantly, especially on their legs, have a higher chance of these forming than those who move around a lot. The key to getting rid of them is moving around when standing, changing positions often when sitting, and elevating legs when resting.

Clothing and footwear can also play a role in poor circulation. The worst shoe you can wear are high heels.  Sneakers and flat shoes allow the blood to circulate better. Tight clothing on legs is another problem. The tightness restricts blood flow causing these to form and worsen any that you have. Whenever possible, support hose should be worn during the day to promote a good circulation.

How much you weigh can also be causing these to form. When you carry around extra pounds, you put extra pressure on your legs. All that weight makes it hard for the blood to circulate as it needs to. Just dropping a few pounds will take a lot of pressure off the veins and your legs. You may also need to limited your salt intake, as salt is one of the major factors that lead to spider veins.

To fade the ones you have naturally, you can turn to cold water. Take a cold shower or bath in the morning to get the circulation going and the blood pumping. Afterwards, wet a towel with cold water, rub down the problem areas, and then massage dry. This massaging of the problem areas will increase blood circulation to the skin, which will help clear up the problem.

There are medical treatments that can also help clear up the problem areas. One such common treatment is Sclerotherapy. This involves injections into each affected, which close and scar the vein to force blood to circulate to healthier areas. It takes a few weeks after treatment for the discomfort to disappear and the fading to occur.

A popular medical treatment is laser surgery. Mainly used on the face and upper body, laser is used to fade small affected veins. However, procedures for the legs are starting to be used. Since this is a non-invasive treatment, it is fast but it may require multiple treatments to clear up the problem.

If left untreated, spider veins, or varicose veins,  can turn into a serious circulation problem. Luckily, today there are medical treatments to use whenever natural ones are not enough. A healthy circulation in the body is the best preventative medicine though. So pay attention to how you sit and stand, avoid tight clothing, and keep your weight at a healthy level to prevent worsening your condition and causing new ones to appear.
