Basic Information When Applying For A Passport

For those applying for a passport for the first time, the process can seem a bit daunting. There are specific rules that must be followed if you are applying for the first time. There are also different rules depending on the age of the applicant.

Apply In Person

Although it is possible for some to apply online, first time applicants will be required to apply in person at a local office. Other times that you will be required to apply in person include persons under the age of 16, if you have lost your original passport or it was damaged or stolen, and those people that have not gotten a new one in 15 years or more. If your name has changed and you cannot provide documentation, you will also need to apply in person.

Child Passports

Regardless to age, everyone in the United States is required to have a passport when traveling out of the country. Minors that do not have the required ID can apply for theirs with the assistance of a parent or legal guardian provided the guardian has the appropriate photo ID. Handwritten or other types of parental or guardian consent will typically be required.

Form DS-11

The DS-11 form, available to print online, is required when applying, whether it is your first time applying or not. To help speed up the process and avoid potential delays, do not sign the form until you are at the office where you will be applying. Also be sure to include your social security number so that you are not denied.

Proof Of Citizenship

Another requirement is to provide proof of citizenship. USA born citizens can provide a certified copy of their birth certificate as valid proof. Citizens that were born outside of the United States can provide either a citizenship or naturalization certificate as proof. If this is a replacement passport, bring the old one as valid proof unless it is damaged.

Valid ID

A valid form of ID, preferably with a photograph, will also be required. If a driver’s license or military ID with a photo is not available, items such as a credit card, employee ID, or library card, when used in conjunction with each other, can be suitable as replacements. Another option, the DS-71 form, can be filed by a friend. If this form is used, it must be filled out and signed in front of an agent when you apply.

Fees

Any fees due, including application and execution fees, are due and payable when the application is filled out. Fees vary based on the age of the person and the type of application that needs to be filed. Additional fees for options including expedited passport services may also be required.

Applying for a passport is not difficult although the wait to receive it can be time consuming. If you will be traveling, it is best to apply as soon as possible. If you delay you may force yourself into having to pay extra fees for expedited service to ensure a timely delivery. Planning ahead will be beneficial in saving you some money.
