Dubstep Leads to Ecstasy Addiction

by AdamS on August 16, 2012

A relatively new genre of music has gained a lot of support over the last few years.  It’s called dubstep and there is a pretty big divide on the opinion of it.  Some people cannot get enough of it, while most others find it terribly annoying and hard to listen to at all.  The music is mostly listened to by teenagers and young adults who flock to dubstep concerts in droves to see their favorite dubstep artists like Skrillex and DeadMaus.  These artists are DJs and they synthesize electronic music instead of singing or performing music with traditional instruments like most other artists and bands.  Dubstep music has also contributed to the rise in ecstasy addiction due to the nature of the music being played.  People enjoy the way the loud bass and electronic sounds affect them while they are high on ecstasy and other drugs. What Exactly Is Dubstep?

Dubstep is a new type of electronic music that originated in South England about 5 years ago.  It is very hard to technically define the exact style of dubstep music since it is such a new and different genre.  From what most sources say, the music takes an electronic bass sound that has a tempo usually around 140-160 beats per minute and then incorporates a mixture of different sounds from other instruments.  The beat is usually very disjointed at parts and drops up and down throughout the songs.  Early dubstep was very slow and had a heavier sound to it, while newer dubstep is much more rapid sounding and disjointed.

Drug Use and Dubstep

When techno and house music became somewhat popular in the late 1990s, there was a trend of people attending “underground” raves in which they’d take ecstasy and twirl glowsticks while listening to techno music.  Dubstep has taken this activity to a whole new level because of its popularity.  Skrillex has won multiple Grammy awards for his music bringing dubstep into the mainstream.  Ecstasy has also changed over the years and now the drug “Molly” is a more pure version of ecstasy that has more profound effects on the mind and body.  The term molly is derived from the word molecule because molly is considered to be the purest form of MDMA, whereas traditional ecstasy is cut with fillers like baking soda.

Dangers of Taking Molly

Molly is extremely dangerous because it affects the brain in numerous ways stimulating the release of neurotransmitters.  This overstimulation causes the body to feel euphoric and also creates hallucinations as the eyes begin to have trouble focusing on light.  The drug causes the heart to race and the body to become dangerously dehydrated.  This can cause people taking the drug to go into cardiac arrest and die.

Dubstep is the newest music craze in America as well as Europe and is causing many people to become addicted to Ecstasy.  People need to be more aware of the dangers of these drugs so they can avoid becoming the latest victim of ecstasy overdose.  Hopefully this trend does not continue to grow as quickly as it is right now, because it is threatening more and more young lives.
