Most fishermen consider blue marlin fishing the most awesome adventure possible. Due to the size and strength of this fish, the fisherman is given a special challenge. Also, due to the fact that this fish is rare, it is a special treat to sight and catch it. Gear varies, is specialized, and can become very expensive. This selection of gear and technique depends on the size of the fish and the preferences of the fisherman.

Gear Types

There are three types of gear to be used in catching this fish. First, there is the artificial lure. There is also rigged natural and live bait. Different fishermen prefer different types of gear. This gives the thrill of choosing the type that will more effectively entice the fish sought.

Artificial Lures

Artificial lures can be used for all marlin, from the smallest to the largest. They particular type used depends on what size fish you are wanting to catch. These fish are a very aggressive species. They are very attracted to the action of these lures and how they look in the water. The lures are constructed of a head made from plastic or metal, with an added plastic skirt. This specialized construction give the lure it special action. This challenges the fisherman to adjust the construction to get the greatest action for the fish sought.

Natural Bait

The next type of gear is rigged natural bait. This type of gear is selected by the fisherman, based on preference of construction. They are made by wrapping wire or string around the bait and attaching a single hook or set of hooks. They are specially made to attract the fish desired. They are sometimes combined with artificial lures to make a skirted bait or combination of bait/lure.

Prefered Type

Possibly the most challenging of all three types of gear is using live bait. The fisherman must judge how fast to troll to appeal to the fish but still keep the bait alive. Tuna is used as the bait, with skipjack being the preferred type of tuna. It is best to use this method in areas where the fish are heavily concentrated, such as near Fish Aggregation Device buoys or near underwater ledges.

Fish Landing

Landing this fish can take as many as six hours of intensive work. Plus, even after struggling for up to 6 hours for the catch, you can lose it at the last moment. Some fishermen make the task a little easier by working as a team with other fishermen, each taking a turn fighting the big fish.

Kill Or Release

Some fishermen kill the catch and others just tag it and release. They ones who kill their catch reason that it will die anyway after this exhausting battle. Others advocate tagging and releasing to help preserve the species, which is somewhat rare. They reason that they can get excellent artificial ones at a taxidermy shop that will celebrate their accomplishment. Often, fishing charters require the tag and release.

Ultimate Sport

Blue marlin fishing is the ultimate sport for fun and challenge. To land one, the fisherman must be in great physical shape, with lots of determination, strength, and stamina to land this huge, aggressive and beautiful fish that tops the food chain. For anyone who loves a challenge with their enjoyment, this is the best you can find with a marlin fishing charter.
