Krokodil, K2, and Kratom?

by Bridget on March 20, 2012

Currently the United States is battling all sorts of designer drugs, from bath salts to K2. Parents now have to watch their kids as they venture to the spice rack and attempt to run off with some nutmeg, and yet again, there is another ridiculous “safe” high. Kratom. Kratom is an opiate like leaf from Southeast Asia that is making an appearance in an Emergency Room near you. Those who become ensnared in the Kratom leaf definitely must seek help at a drug detox center for addiction treatment services before becoming a drug dependency statistic.

Holistic Purposes

Traditionally used in holistic medicine it can combat fatigue and pain as well as depressive episodes. It also can boost ones energy and give them a surge in confidence when dealing with stressful social situations. Although Kratom could have possibly been the end to “awkward turtle” it is only the beginning of addiction.

Kratom Kraze

Now, within the United States the once innocent Kratom is of course, being combined with other chemical adulterants that make it far more dangerous than it was ever intended to be, especially if mixed with other sedatives such as alcohol. Essentially this peace inducing drug which was also used as an antidote for opiate addiction and heroin addiction has now become an addictive substance itself.

Kratom Dependency

Kratom can become very addictive and just has some ridiculous side effects. So, the drug that was supposed to boost confidence and make social situations super successful instead induces anxiety, insomnia, intestinal illnesses, depression, and the ever popular loss of libido. Look’s like that addiction backfired. In addition to dependency, overdoses can also occur. Overdoses bring on symptoms like hallucinations, depression, delusions, more intestinal problems, constipation, dry mouth, aggression and tremors are also common as well as listlessness.

Kratom Withdrawal

Withdrawal from Kratom is basically identical to that of heroin. Chills, goose bumps, muscle aches and body pain all over are just some of the wonderful attributes of going through Kratom detox. Individuals are arriving in emergency rooms with these symptoms and mystifying doctors until they come clean about Kratom use. However, many doctors have not heard of this substance which makes it even more dangerous.

Dangers

Between 2010 and 2011 nine deaths were associated with the use of Kratom, although it was undetermined whether Kratom was the main culprit for the deaths or one of the added substances in the mixture. Currently Kratom is a controlled substance in Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark, and Poland. It is also controlled in Australia and New Zealand and many Southeast Asian countries. Eventually Kratom will fall in rank with bath salts, K2, and other brands of synthetic marijuana, but at what cost.

The problem is people think that because it’s a ‘holistic’ medicine, it’s ‘safe’. That is purely not the case. Unfortunately this substance just like the examples of bath salts and spice can’t be regulated fast enough, as designer drugs are a step ahead of regulating agencies and medical communities. Hopefully those with addictive tendencies stay clear of this substance and any unknown mixture that contains it. There is no telling what it can be combined with and how dangerous it is. Anyone who does become entangled in a dependency on Kratom must seek out help immediately at a drug detox center to prevent them from spiraling down the rocky road of addiction.
