Porta Shots Are The New Flasks

by Bridget on May 18, 2012

For drinkers who think that flasks are too cumbersome, or hold too much alcohol, there is a new product on the market. Porta shots are individual packets, about 3×3 inches in size, that contain a single shot of your favorite liquor. With Porta Shots, individuals who are looking to secretly imbibe their favorite drinks can have access to a shot with ultimate discretion.

Porta Shot

Porta Shot’s founder, Andre Beukes, promotes his line of beverages as a way for people to control their drinking, rather than exacerbate it. He believes that his product will help people cut down on the amount of alcohol drink, by offering single sized servings of whiskey, rum, or vodka. The packets only contain 1 ounce of liquor.

Dangers

Many people are already in an uproar about the potential dangers a product like this could promote. They packets are going to be sold at the unbelievable price of 75 cents. Compared to a shot at any local bar or restaurant, which can be up to $10, it appears that the Porta Shots will instantly find a loyal fan base. However, many people worry that this new fan base will be kids.

Opponents

People who are in opposition to this new way to serve alcohol warn that young people will be able to sneakily drink anywhere they want. School, church, at home, virtually anywhere can become a bar to someone who has a pocket full of Porta Shots. This is what has so many parents upset. The founder of the company claims that he is not trying to market his product to kids, and that in the future he wants to sell Porta Shots in a package so that you cannot purchase individual shots. This does not seem enough to appease the many opponents of Porta Shots.

Kids

“If you go into anybody’s home that drinks, there’s usually a liquor cabinet with vodka in it somewhere, “says Mr. Beukes. “How do you know that their kids haven’t been drinking from that?” While this is certainly a valid point, one cannot argue that it would be much easier to have a packet of liquor in your pocket than a cumbersome glass bottle. It is not going to take kids very long to hear about how easily they can carry around booze unnoticed with Porta Shots.

As with any new alcohol craze, it is incumbent upon parents and teachers to explain to their children the dangers associated with alcohol abuse. It does not matter what type of package alcohol is served in, if a person abuses it and consumes too much, they will suffer consequences. Porta Shots may be the latest trend, but concealing alcohol consumption in public is not. People have been carrying flasks for years. Porta Shots is simply an updated version in a cooler package. If you suspect someone you know is struggling with an addiction to alcohol, and is hiding their drinking in public, it is wise for you to convince them to get help at an alcohol inpatient treatment facility
