What Does Evangelism Mean In Today’s World?

by Bridget on September 5, 2012

Evangelism, simply put, is the determined advocacy of a certain cause. In Christianity, this refers to individuals who diligently promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ to others. Those who specialize in evangelism studies are known as evangelists. They do their best to offer proof of God to those who do not yet believe in the scripture. However, in today’s ever changing society, what does being an Evangelist really mean?

Evangelists are leaders in every sense of the word. They brave the progressive sectors of society and try to shine the light of the word on those who would probably not otherwise get the chance to hear it. This is not a job for anyone who is unsure or wavering in their spirituality, rather, it is for individuals who feel a special calling to share the Bible with people who they may not know on a personal level. Interestingly, the term Evangelism is never found in the Bible. Yet, it is clear to anyone who has read the scripture that spreading the Christian faith to far off lands and destinations is one of the more noble causes a person can undertake.

In the Bible, the four Evangelists are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Matthew 28:19-20 states, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” This passage is a favorite among many Evangelicals who feel called to spread their interpretation of the Bible to countries all over the world through charity missions and expeditions.

Different Avenues

While starting a ministry or going on a mission are very popular means of Evangelism, there are other avenues for people who feel like they need to share the Bible with others. A person can feel called to teach, create art, sing, or perform any other type of activity that draws other people attention to the message of Christianity. In fact, the Christian music industry has played a very significant role in the 20th century of bringing likeminded individuals, and those who had never heard about the Bible before, together.
If you are someone who feels the need to offer proof of God to others, taking a course in Evangelism studies may be a great thing for you to do. There are many wonderful Universities and schools that teach people how they can better spread the Gospel by learning effective communication methods to get the point across without sounding “preachy”. If you are interested in learning how you can become an Evangelist, or are already one and just want to brush up on Scripture, go online today and research classes and ministries in your area. You are sure to be able to find a program that is right for you and your schedule, and you’ll be better equipped to go out into the World and spread the message of the Bible.
